By The Phone was conceived about three hours after a break up I had. I was listening to John Denver’s Leaving On A Jet Plane, and holding my phone, waiting for a good night message or call that I knew I was no longer going to receive.
FUN FACT: I have since written an alternate second verse, and occasionally play it out. A new verse to tell a new story.

I am on the road now, singing stories left and right
Telling tales of heartbreak, and those who won their fight
Playing out to crowds who might as well be all the same
No matter where I go, I'll never forget her name

Though the miles are behind me
I remember where I've been
Though we’ve taken two directions

Lying in there in bed thinking of when things were alright

She is a teacher, the best one on the keys
Teaching kids to learn and love all new melodies
She has so much grace, a huge heart deep inside
A heart that once was mine

If I heard that piano play
I think I'd break down and cry
But by the line i still wait
Even though we said goodbye

Months have passed since we’ve talked last
But shes always on my mind
As I hope to hear her voice
I wonder sometimes
