Though Easy was one of the first songs I wrote for this project, I knew I wanted to save this for the end. The rest of the album discusses my time away from home, but Easy was written during my first winter break returning home. I remarked to my dad in the car as we passed the Hudson River that the new apartments blocked the river. So much was changing, and I did not like it. Looking back on everything, and seeing how many things played out, it was all necessary for me on my journey. I have come so far as a musician, and a person since when I first wrote this song. I am in a much better headspace, and have learned how to take care of myself. I feel successful, accomplished, and overall content. Even with college ending, and a new part of my journey beginning, I feel competent in the wisdom and knowledge I have gained, and I trust the journey that I am on. I know now that we all go at our own pace, and I trust that I am going to make it to where I need to be.
Easy is not necessarily a victorious, cheery return home, but rather a realistic one. Things change, people move on, and life is not as squeaky-clean as I once thought it was. Easy is a reminder that life will always be a struggle; however, we are in control of our perception and mindset. Regardless of whatever comes your way, you have to pick up your chin, grin and bear it. No one will do the hard stuff for you. You have to take those steps yourselves, and that is one of the most important lessons that I’ve learned away from home.
lyrics
Apartments block the river now.
You can't see it from the road.
No more of those passing sails
No more of finding hope
You see he's been away while now
Time has a way of changing face
But now the clock on the wall ain't right
Even twice a day
But when he feels so hopeless
After getting lost within the city
He can still do a whole lot more
Than sit and look pretty
Time was once an old friend
But it's since cheated him around
Its left him torn and tattered
His face looks like a battleground
And the darkness of the night
As he lays pleading with himself to sleep
Thinking about what he could've done
If he wasn't so weak.
As the rain drops fall on the car
Like the teardrops on his face
He still finds a smile somehow
Holding out for a saving grace, saying
It'll be easy
Everything will be alright
I'll be free
It's just a matter of time.
Hope maybe blind,
But so should being kind.
So I'll pray for my chance to say
It's gonna be easy
She comes from a broken home
Pieces shatter about
She makes love to the bottle at night
Trying to control the storm clouds
She looks for happiness in the wrong places
She thinks life is cruel joke
Yet she spits in loved ones faces
Too afraid of getting too close
As they lie together
Flesh touching flesh
He gently calms down saying
"We'll get out of this mess"
Apartments block the river now
You can't see it from the road
However, we still got the stars
We'll take them wherever we go
