First of all, with the name “Long Way Home,” I had to include it in “Away From Home!” This song came out of a jam session with my good friend and roommate Nick Rivera. Nick was one of the first friends I made here at college, and its awesome to see how we have stuck together through it all, and even living with each other for two years. Nick and I worked on a few songs together, but personally, this is my favorite.
This song is funny to me, and has become more and more meaningful to me because of several sets of circumstances. I've asked other songwriter this question: "Have you ever written a song about something out of nowhere, and then after writing the song, the events play out as you wrote it?" This happened to be one of those songs. The irony is that in regard to the person I experienced this with, this happened to be one of their favorite songs I wrote up until then. Call it whatever, but for a song that I had no business writing at the time, it ended up becoming a song that is very near and dear to my heart.
