about

We Can Dance is a “real” love song. What I mean is that it represents an accurate description of a relationship- how things are not perfect. I wrote it after a big fight with my then-girlfriend. I was so furious after the fight, but instead of turning to awful thoughts and actions, I tried to focus on one of our first romantic moments together- our first dance at prom. When I originally wrote the song, I wrote it with a sad ending, with the couple breaking up, as at the time, I was consumed by the fear of ending that relationship. I presented it to my parents, and my mom pleaded with me to write a happy ending. She thought that the song could be a beautiful wedding song if I did so. After much opposition, I did eventually compose a happy ending, which is what is featured on this album. You’re welcome, Mom.

lyrics

We've come so far since we were young
Days of when the school bell rung
Man oh man, how you have grown
And when you let your hair fall down
I can picture you in that gown
I never want to leave you alone

And I do the things that I do
Not just to pester you
But because I love the way you are
And if you were to leave
In body or spiritually
I think I'd lose my heart

I think back to that first night
When the swans lay by the bend
The night was ours to take,
And then I finally said

We can dance
We can waltz across that floor
I'll hold your hand
This ain't a song I can ignore
I'll give you all of me
And I'll pray there's more in store
So here I'll hold you close
Until you don't need me anymore

All of the times you were by yourself
Puts my soul in a prison cell
I feel that I did you wrong
We may fight over who knows best
But we put that all to rest
Cause we remember when we hear that song

And now the times have changed
But you and I, we have remained.
You've kept your hand in mine
They’re have been bumps along our path
But there's no secret to how we last
We still picture in our minds, that

We can dance
We can waltz across that floor
I'll hold your hand
This ain't a song we can ignore
I'll give you all of me
And I know there's more in store.
So here I'll hold you close,
As I will forever more.
