about

I was at Barnes and Noble one day, and by the check out, there were a number of children’s books. I read a couple of them, and then I stumbled upon “The Night You Were Born” by Nancy Tillman. The poetry was so sweet and authentic, and the illustrations were so vibrant. It melted my cold heart (literally cold, it was February and freezing!), and brought such a smile to my face. That got me thinking of how I wish I was a little kid again. As I waited for the CDTA bus to pick me up, I thought of the line, “I wish I knew now what I knew then,” an obvious play on words from the common phrase “I wish I knew then what I know now.”
The concept is that as we grow older, we sadly lose some of that imagination and wonder that we possess when we are children. But it is also amazing how easily we can pick it up again if we tried. Sometimes, we can do it by picking up a book.

lyrics

Today I picked up a children's book
I don't know why, but I needed a look
It had few words, but it spoke to me
Reminded me of a melody
That I hadn't heard in a while
All the colors upon the page
Brought a sudden light to my face
From inside I began to change
It erased all of the age
As I began to smile

It's been awhile since I felt this way
Brought me back to yesterday
Wanna make the world my own
Like a child, with room to grow
Don’t kniw when that came to an end...
Wish I knew now what I knew then

Always keep that youthful glow
It's more important than you may know
I can see that light in your eyes
Burning bright like a wildfire, and
I can't wait to see what you'll do
Just like Neverland
A child's mind is free from man
There's no limits to where you'll go
If you know where the wind may blow
I hope you stay gold and true

Suddenly it's not all the same
Magics come and it's here to say
I see the world in a whole new way
You remind me how to play
Like I did many years ago
So I pick up that children's book
And it's given a brand new look
The lights no longer on the page
Rather I see it on the face
And within your beautiful soul

It's been awhile since I felt this way
Brought me back to yesterday
You want to make the world your own
You're a child with room to grow
It's coming back to me again
I'm relearning now what I knew then
