So, for a peppy song, I actually wrote this song when I was in a very negative mindset. I wrote this song at a time where I was auditioning for all these different ensembles, and contests, and trying to get gigs, and I was being turned down by everything. I was even told after one audition that they thought my music was too depressing. So, that night, I said to myself, "Screw them, I'm going to write a happy song, dammit!" So, the song just came to me in a matter of a half hour, and I spent the entire night playing it over and over again. I was so in love with it. Since then, it has been quite a crowd pleaser.
In fact, it has brought me a number of “yes’s” since its birth. I shot my first music video for this song, and it included a great crowd of St. Rose friends and community members. That was such a humbling experience to get to share with so many people! Then, in the summer of 2019, I paired up with the American Cancer Society and released the song on BandCamp in order to raise money for their event, Park of Hope, which I got to play at with Alex Hitrick, whose talent is all over this album. Yes will also be featured on PBS’s Celebration of Music program, airing tentatively in December of 2020. Finally, in mid November of 2019, I learned that Yes had been nominated for two Independent Music Awards, including Inspirational Song of the Year and Mainstream Video of the Year, and I received a nomination as an artist as New Discovery Artist. I guess this just comes to show that people appreciate the positive, wholesome content, and that perseverance and hard work can truly pay off. Keep reaching for your “yes.”
lyrics
When the world tells you "No! No! No!"
And the haters tell you to "Go! Go! Go!"
Where would you be if you did what they say
It's a good thing we don't play that way
Otherwise there'd be
So many untaken roads
So many tales untold
There should be no one telling us where we are
This ain't an easy fight
Don't let them get in your mind
But we won't stop until we reach the stars
There ain't no time to second guess
After a thousand "no's"
It only takes one "yes!"
So many times you feel without a friend
And all you need is someone with a hand to lend
There's a thousand hearts that know where you've been
The time is now, let your dreams begin
Otherwise there'd be
Paintings without their color
Sisters without their brothers
There won't be any light from the warmth up above
Reach out and grab a hand
'Cause we're not etched in the sand
And let yourself know that you are loved!
It only takes one moment to turn your life around
It only takes one smile to forget you ever frowned
Whatever your dream is it is worth all the stress
Because within your heart, you said "yes"
So, when the world tells you "No! No! No!"
All I have to say
Is "let it go!"
I feel it in my chest!
I swear to God I'm blessed!
And despite all the stress
I'll strive to be the best!
